Women in Comics – Abby Denson

Writer and artist Abby Denson has worked with Marvel, DC, Archie and the Simpsons, but is probably best down for her own work. Dolltopia is a favourite of mine, a story about dolls that that rebel against what they’re supposed to be, and go off to join Dolltopia. She was kind enough to answer a few questions for us.

How did you get into comics?

I’ve always read comics and drew, but really got into making my own while I was in art school. When I got into indie comics and manga and had some story ideas, that drove me to do it myself.

Tell us a bit about the projects you’ve worked on.

Tough Love and Dolltopia are my graphic novels. Tough Love (which first ran as a series in XY Magazine) is about a gay teen coming out in high school and his Kung Fu fighting boyfriend. Dolltopia is about dolls who are tired of being controlled by humans so they start their own society. Dolltopia also just won the International Manga Award, which is very exciting! I’ve also done lots of licensed writing for Marvel, DC, and Archie Comics. Now I’m working on a cartoon dessert blog called City Sweet Tooth (www.citysweettooth.com)

What is your favourite work that you’ve done so far?

Wow, that’s a hard one! Tough Love is very special since it had a real effect on the readers’ lives (based on the fan mail I received). Dolltopia might be my favorite currently, but I also am loving doing my dessert comics! Not really a definitive answer, sorry about that!

Did you ever get advice about the field that you’d like to pass on?

I’d say, only do comics if you love it, the work is hard and you need the passion to drive you through it (I’ve heard so many pros give that advice, I don’t think I could attribute it to anyone in particular). It’s so true!

What is your favourite thing to write or draw?

I love to draw fun and cute things. Lately desserts and cats are something I draw a lot. Also, cute boys!

In an ideal world, in what direction would you like to see your project evolve?

I’m currently working on a collection of my City Sweet Tooth and other food comics. Ideally I’d love to be able to do my food and travel comics full time and why not spin it off as a TV Show and some apps! I also like doing paintings, so an art show would be cool too.

And finally your last thought.

If you want to make comics, give it a shot! Follow your bliss.
