Question of the Week – Favorite Team

Our Question of the Week this time around asks what our favorite teams are! It’s a harder question than you’d think, you know.

The Young Avengers are my babies! Part of me wants to say X-Factor, but the Young Avengers are the kids I love to follow most. They’re bright eyed and extremely naive at times, but it’s great to see how close they are, how their friendships and relationships have developed over time, and how they stand up for what’s right. Even when it means standing up to the Avengers and other grown up heroes.

This was actually a harder question than you might think. I love team books, and I love team ups. I grew up reading X-Men and West Coast Avengers (yes, I am that old) and Alpha Flight. I moved onto Birds of Prey and Secret Six and Runaways and… There are just so many good teams and great partnerships.

In the end, I decided that my favourite team has to be the Birds of Prey. Not only were they strong, kick-ass, intelligent women, but they were real people. They were friends (though not right away, it took them time to trust and like each other) and that made their team-up that much stronger and more important to me.

I haven’t really been quiet about my love of the X-Men, so they’re without a doubt my favorite team, overall. Recently, I’ve gained a new respect for The Justice League (their New 52 reboot is one of my favorite comics right now), but ultimately, my love of comics began with the X-Men and that’s a big part of why they’re my favorite. Specifically, though, (and I might get a bit of flack for this), my overall favorite would have to be the Ultimate X-Men (Volume 1) team. I loved that re imagining of the X-Men in general, but 1610-verse is near and dear to my heart.

Cyclops, Jean, Iceman, Beast, Colossus and Storm aren’t the original founding members of the team, of course, but in this instance I thought they worked really, really well, and the first few trade paperbacks of that series are the ones that I find myself coming back to the most.

Without a doubt it would have to be the Avengers. From their original combination all the way through to their current set, I have been dedicated to the title. I’m talking about the pure Avengers, though I’ll give love to the New Avengers and the Secret Avengers, both teams I enjoy reading with equal joy (just as I loved the campy weirdness of the West Coast Avengers), but the original flavor still has my heart. Whether they are fighting Norman Osborne and his Avengers or fighting amongst themselves, I like seeing what they are up to. It can be messy and sometimes they are their own worst enemies, but you can still see the hints of the originals even though membership has changed so much. Plus they rock a killer montage.

About Angel

A 29 year old everything-nerd living in the southern United States. I devour films and British television like it's my job. My first love is Marvel and the X-Men, but Batman and all of his little helper birds are quickly weaseling their way in.

I’ve gotta agree with Kurumais. Agent’s of Atlas was one of the best team books to date and I’d go so far as to say the new Defenders book is the best anti-team (team that isn’t team like) book, Justice League Dark is a close second.
