Webcomic Wednesday: Nimona

Webcomic Wednesdays is a weekly feature here at Girls Read Comics Too. Each week, we like to shine a spotlight on one of the webcomics that we happen to keep up with on the interwebs.

Nimona is a webcomic with a strange grip on my soul. With this admission out of the way, I figure it makes a great start kicking off Webcomic Wednesday: 2013 style. I stumbled upon Noelle’s art over on her tumblr after one of the blogs that I follow reblogged some of her The Broship of the Rings fan art. Needless to say that after clicking through some tags, I decided to follow her tumblr and haven’t looked back. Which is kind of why I’m surprised at myself for not talking about a webcomic that I find myself obsessively clicking “next” on when I get to the newest update in the hopes maybe, just maybe, something magical would have happened and there would be an unscheduled new page. So far it hasn’t worked, but that hasn’t stopped me.

Why should read Nimona? I think the better question is why shouldn’t you? No seriously, if you are a fan of any of the following: web comics, villains, knights with amazing hair, shapeshifters, dragons, dudes with only one arm, continuing plot arcs, and/or humor then you will find something to like about Nimona. Set in a world where people gallivant about in armor and participate in jousts but at the same time have some serious high tech labs, there is a heavy dose of amusing anachronism going on. Our heroine, Nimona, appoints herself the sidekick/squire of Lord Ballister Blackheart who typically takes up the villain to Sir Goldenloin of the shiny hair’s hero. It’s a witty and amusing comic with a real heart and I seriously want to know what happens next.  Plus Nimona is a punkrock shapeshifter. Why would you not want to be her fan (or be her)?

The art is fun and visually appealing and looks like the sort of doodle you’d make in class which means each one probably takes hours/weeks to compile and that makes me love it more. The style reminds me vaguely of Kate Beaton’s, but as I love Kate Beaton I don’t have a problem with this.

About Lina

A university graduate with three too many degrees and an urge to just keep moving. Not too keen to stay on the beaten path, moving is all that she feels like doing. Pieced together from a little bit of everywhere (culturally speaking) she has a love of pop culture and learning that is kind of out of control. Sometimes she acts a little bit like an insane old British lady or an eight year old on speed. Let's not get her started on the books (or soap operas or her affection for making up drinking games). Then we'd be here all day.

Funny that you should post this just now. Yesterday morning I was thinking about how I’d really like to read a fantasy webcomic. I read Looking For Group, but I think it’s a comic with an identity crisis… it can’t tell if it wants to be a fantasy/adventure or a fantasy/gag comic. It’s ok, and I’ll keep reading it, but Nimona looks wonderful. I will definitely give it a look.

Ok, I’ve just whipped through the first three chapters of Nimona and I *love* it! :D
